Members-only swimming club based on the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park, founded 1864 — the oldest swimming club in Britain. The clubhouse sits on the south bank of the lake at the Lido building, a 1930s modernist pavilion with horizontal banding and steel windows. Swimming takes place in the open Serpentine lake itself, water surface around 12 hectares, ringed by mature plane trees and grass banks. The clubhouse holds a functional changing room, lockers and showers — cold showers, the same temperature as the lake. Members enter the water from a timber jetty between 5:30am and 9:30am every day. The lake can freeze in winter; water hits over 20°c in summer.

  • members only, no guests — you need to join the club to swim, not turn up. the application process is the gate.
  • the handicap race runs every saturday morning at 8am, year-round. it's the social fabric of the club, not just a race.
  • the peter pan christmas day race is the annual fixture — you have to do the winter series to qualify. that's how you earn it.
  • the showers in the clubhouse are the same temperature as the serpentine. cold. that's not a fault, it's the club.
  • swimming is 5:30am to 9:30am every day. the regulars know each other by face and by stroke. it's the oldest swimming club in britain and feels like it.
