What you'd want to know
London's first purpose-built swimming lake, opened 2019 in Beckenham Place Park — a 285-metre-long open-water lake reaching 3.5 metres deep, set within the wooded park grounds. Natural-edged with grass banks, reed margins and a gravel beach on the south side where swimmers enter. A small wooden pontoon and a simple changing area with timber benches and coat hooks; no showers or dry-changing block. Marker buoys outline the swim loops out into the water. Wildflower meadow and oak trees ring the lake; the historic Beckenham Place mansion stands beyond the southern slope. A small café in the mansion serves coffee and food post-swim. Spartan, working-park feel rather than spa polish — the regulars call it muddy in winter and lovely in summer.
Overheard
- operated by ptp coaching, sessions are pre-booked — don't rock up without a slot, especially in summer when paddleboards share the water.
- the beckenham bobbers are the friendly regular crew. weekend mornings the same faces turn up; that's how you become a local.
- the ground is muddy in winter — there's no dry changing area. bring a robe, a mat for your feet, and don't wear good shoes.
- no showers on site. you'll change wet under a robe and drive home with the heater on. that's part of the place.
- the café in the mansion serves coffee and food post-swim — most people walk up there after a session rather than rushing off.
