Women-only natural swimming pond on Hampstead Heath, set in oak and beech woodland north of the Kenwood Estate. A natural-edged pond of around 0.4 hectares with reed beds along the banks and a small jetty and changing room on the south side. The water is fed by Highgate springs, opaque green-brown, and ringed by mature trees that meet overhead in summer. A flagstone path leads from the wooden lifeguard hut to the entry deck, and a circle of plain timber benches and a few stretching pads sits beside the changing rooms. Open year-round, water temperatures drop from 22°C in August to 1°C in February. A rope marker is drawn in once temperatures hit 12°C to restrict swim distance. No mirrors, no music, no signage beyond the basics — deliberately spare.

  • 12°c is when they pull in the rope and the winter season starts. january the water can sit at 2°c, sometimes ice forms on the surface.
  • the lifeguards and the older regulars respect you once you make it through a winter — the camaraderie is real but you have to earn it.
  • you don't need a wetsuit. neoprene gloves and socks help in deep winter; most regulars wear nothing more.
  • the meadow beside the pond is where you change and dry off. there's no café; bring a flask of tea.
  • the women here come every day, year-round — it's a spiritual practice for many, not a fitness thing. don't try to swim long on round one. ten minutes is plenty in january.
