What you'd want to know
Mixed-gender natural pond on Hampstead Heath, on the south side of the Heath near Parliament Hill. A natural-edged pond of around 0.6 hectares with reed beds along the southern bank and a wooden landing platform and lifeguard hut on the east side. Spring-fed water, opaque green-brown, ringed by willows and oaks that reflect on the surface. A small concrete and timber changing block sits beside the entry, with simple benches and coat hooks. Open to the public April to late October; only Hampstead Heath Winter Swimmers Club members swim here in winter, with restricted hours. Summer water hits 22°C; winter dips to 2–6°C. The skyline of the City rises beyond the trees to the south. No signage clutter; the meadow runs gently up to the running track.
Overheard
- closed to the public late october through late march — only winter swimmers club members can swim in deep winter, dawn to 9am and 2pm to dusk.
- if you're new to cold swimming, start at the men's or ladies' ponds instead — they have lifeguards through winter, mixed pond doesn't.
- water drops to 2–6°c in january. cold water shock is real — enter slowly, control the breath, don't dive in.
- most regulars swim short in winter — a minute or two and out. the long swims happen in summer when it's above 15°c.
- neoprene gloves and socks are the kit most regulars wear. no wetsuit; the rules don't allow them in some sessions.
