Cold Water Induction required Nov–Mar; hosts RDSS, Dock2Dock, Sub10 Club for sub-10°C swimmers; community hub framing with year-round regulars.

Open-water swimming venue on the Royal Victoria Dock in Newham, run by Love Open Water. A 1500m loop of dock water set inside the working dock basin, marked by bright yellow buoys laid out from a floating pontoon. The water is dock-clean, salty-fresh, tested to better-than-blue-flag standard. The pontoon and entry deck sit at the western end of the dock with kayaks moored for lifeguards. Steel-truss cable-car towers of the IFS Cloud Royal Docks gondola rise to the south; the Excel Centre and Crystal building stand across the dock. Bathers enter via timber steps from the pontoon. A small changing block with showers, lockers, hot drinks and a swimmer's hut on the dock edge. Open sky over the water; the docklands skyline reflects on the surface.

  • the cold water induction is compulsory november through march, or any time the water drops below 15°c. book it before you turn up for a session.
  • bring a bright swim cap and a tow float — not optional, lifeguards check before you enter the pontoon.
  • the water is cleaner than blue flag beaches — tested to who and eu standards. it's dock water but proper open-water swimming, not a lake.
  • bring your own mug. hot tea and coffee are free for swimmers but the venue stopped providing cups.
  • rdss, dock2dock and sub10 club are the resident groups — sub10 is for swimmers comfortable below 10°c. you'll see the same faces all winter.
