Climbing wall inside Sobell Leisure Centre on Hornsey Road, Finsbury Park — a 1973 buff-brick civic leisure building with a wide low frontage and clerestory glazing. The main 13m lead wall sits in a tall sports-hall annex, painted off-white behind plywood climbing boards in slab, vertical and overhang with bright resin holds in red, blue, yellow and green. A separate bouldering wall stands in the main sports hall; a long bouldering "corridor" runs off to one side with low overhanging panels and a campus board. Fluorescent strip lighting overhead; exposed roof joists and ducting visible above. Mid-grey crash matting along the bouldering floor.

  • the 13m competition lead wall is the headline — well-bolted, problems up to 7a, regularly reset. the regulars come for this not the bouldering corridor.
  • opened 1976, one of london's oldest — it's a leisure-centre wall not a chain, and the regulars are local to finsbury park and holloway.
  • the bouldering corridor is the long overhanging room to the side. don't try the comp wall on round one — warm up there first.
  • club nights can get busy on the lead wall. weekday daytime is the quiet window if you want lines to yourself.
  • better membership at £10.50/year unlocks six better walls — sobell is the regulars' wall but the other five are open to you too.
