Climbing wall inside the new Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre on Adelaide Road, Camden — a 2006 redevelopment by Terry Farrell with a glazed curtain wall and pale-stone frame, sitting next to Hampstead Theatre. The climbing wall occupies a tall double-height annex within the centre, painted matt grey behind plywood boards rising to 14m. Mostly overhanging terrain on the lead wall; a separate bouldering zone runs along one side with low and tall panels. Bright resin holds in red, blue, yellow and green. Auto-belay lines hang along the tallest wall. Mid-grey crash matting beneath the bouldering; concrete floor under the lead area. Recessed strip lighting from the soffit, daylight through clerestory glazing at the top of the volume.

  • the 14m wall is mostly overhanging — if you're a beginner the slab section to the side is where you start, not the comp lines.
  • club nights get busy on the big wall. weekday afternoons before 6pm are the quiet window if you want the comp wall to yourself.
  • the upper section of the wall is netted not glazed — winter sessions can be draughty up high. dress in layers and warm up properly.
  • better £10.50 annual membership unlocks the rest of the network too — if swiss cottage isn't yours, you've still paid for seven other walls.
  • the junior programme and adult beginners courses share the wall. weekend mornings are family-heavy; midweek evenings the after-work regulars come in.
