Free timed 5k, Saturdays 9am — register once online and bring your printed or phone barcode (no barcode, no time). Arrive 15–30 min early for the first-timers' briefing; walking is completely fine, and a tail walker means nobody finishes last alone.

parkrun — London community is the network of free, timed, volunteer-run 5km events held every Saturday 9am at parks and green spaces across London. Each local parkrun has its own start line: a chalkmarked finish funnel, a wooden A-board with the route map, hi-vis-jacketed volunteers at the start, finish and turnaround points.

Runners gather from 8:45am for the first-timers' briefing; the run director addresses the field; the 5km goes off at 9:00am sharp. Routes vary by park — Brockwell, Burgess, Hampstead Heath, Highbury Fields, Tooting Common, Wormwood Scrubs each have their own.

The post-run cafe is the third place: a designated nearby venue where regulars gather with barcode lanyards round their necks. Same volunteers, same route, same coffee shop every week.

  • saturday 9am, 5km, free, everywhere. register once at parkrun.org.uk for a barcode, print it out, bring it every time.
  • the first-timers' briefing happens 8:50am at the start. find the run director — they wear hi-vis — and they'll walk you through it.
  • the local cafe is the third place. find out which one your home parkrun goes to — that's where the regulars are.
  • you don't have to race. walk, jog, push a buggy, do it with a kid. they'll cheer you in regardless.
  • volunteer once you've done it three times. that's how you become a regular — not by running fast, by being there.
